Man accused of manslaughter of Halesowen father after assault near Cradley Heath pub

A man who was assaulted outside a public house suffered repeated epileptic fits as a result of suffering a traumatic brain injury when he fell to the ground. Neil Greenway, of Halesowen, died 13 months after the incident which happened near the Lighthouse Pub, in Coombs Road, Belle Vale, Cradley Heath, on October 8, 2022. He was pushed and fell backwards hitting his head on the ground during a confrontation with Daniel Sedgley, aged 35, Barrister Mr Harpreet Sandhu, prosecuting, told the jury that Mr Greenway sustained head fractures in the fall including to the left side of the skull, the neck joint, bleeding and bruising to the brain. He was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital following the incident. He had suffered brain damage and blindness. Mr Sandhu said: 'These injuries had been caused as a result of the assault by Daniel Sedgley. 'Neil Greenway received treatment which involved observations of the brain and spinal cord function. 'He was given a course of anti seizure medication. On October 12 a review by the neurosurgery team noted that he reported having a severe headache and dizziness. 'This was caused by swelling to the front of the brain around areas of bleeding and signs of increasing pressure within the skull cavity. 'There was a need to reduce blood pressure. Later that day he was drowsy and had seizures lasting more than 20 seconds. 'He was given anti-convulsion medication and given oxygen to help with his breathing, and ultimately surgery.' Following periods in and out of hospital and subsequently moving to a Perton Manor Care Home in Wrottesley Park Road in Perton near Wolverhampton, Mr Greenway, died aged 52, on November 3, 2023. Sedgley, of Longbridge Road, Halesowen, is currently standing trial for Mr Greenway's manslaughter which he has denied. He previously served a 20-month jail term in September 2022 for pleading guilty to wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent on Mr Greenway. The jury has been told that much of the evidence will involve showing CCTV, looking at evidence relating to medical reports and pathology around the cause of Mr Greenway's death. On Tuesday the jury was shown CCTV of the assault which appeared to involve the two men facing each other before the defendant pushed the victim who appeared to fall heavily on his back. Sedgley and another man were captured on film attempting to rouse Mr Greenway and placing him in a sitting up position then on his side. West Midlands Ambulance crews were called to the scene before transporting him to the Birmingham hospital. The jury was also shown footage of the victim chatting with care home staff, who were giving him one-to-one care the day before he passed away. Due to the risk of falls and seizures Mr Greenway needed to wear a special helmet when he was up and about and a crash mat was installed next to his low level bed. Sedgley denies manslaughter.
