Jacksonville is an 8.5-point home favorite over Cleveland with a total of 40.5. My play is the Jaguars. The story of this game is the QB matchup and it starts with Cleveland's decision at the position. Deshaun Watson is Cleveland's starter for Week 1. He didn't play a single snap in 2025 while recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. He just won the offseason quarterback battle against Shedeur Sanders in late August. His first game action in almost 21 months comes on the road, in a hostile division environment, against a top-3 defense from a year ago. Watson's mobility was already declining before the Achilles injury. Coming back from that specific surgery at his age, with a Browns offense that ranked 31st in scoring last year, is a spot that historically produces sluggish returns. Preseason didn't help — the Browns held Watson out of their preseason finale, meaning he'll have live game reps for the first time in the regular season opener. That's a lot to ask. On the other sideline, Trevor Lawrence is healthy and has a full year of Liam Coen's offense under his belt. Coen's Year 2 setup should have this offense running significantly cleaner than it did in Week 1 last year. The Jaguars have real weapons — Brian Thomas Jr., Parker Washington, and Jakobi Meyers form a legit receiver room, and rookie Travis Hunter could be a factor on offense as well. Bijan Robinson isn't in Jacksonville, but the run game will find yards against a Browns front that lost Myles Garrett in the offseason. That last piece is significant. Cleveland traded Myles Garrett to the Rams as part of a massive offseason move. Garrett had 23 sacks last year and was the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Losing that kind of production changes what the Browns defense can do. Their pass rush is now built around younger, unproven pieces, and their ability to disrupt Lawrence has been considerably weakened. Jacksonville's 2025 defense finished third in EPA/Play. The pass rush is real, the coverage is sound, and their scheme has been designed specifically to make quarterbacks uncomfortable. That's a bad matchup for a QB coming off Achilles surgery and trying to find rhythm in his first live action. Trends back the pick too. The Jaguars were 7-2 against the spread at home last season. The Browns were 2-6 against the spread on the road. That's a real gap in team profiles that shows up in this exact type of matchup. The line moved from -7 to -8.5 during the week, with the juice on the Jaguars sitting at slightly better than even money at some books. That's a real signal about where sharp money is going. When the market is pushing a favorite bigger while offering better prices, they're essentially saying the line should be higher than -9. 8.5 in this spot is fair given the QB health asymmetry, the defensive advantage at home, and Cleveland's offensive limitations. Realistic scores like Jacksonville 27, Cleveland 13 (14-point margin) cover comfortably. The Pick: Jacksonville Jaguars -8.5
