Erdogan: Search continues for missing near Kyrenia

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that nine ships and 11 aircraft are involved in the search for 14 people considered missing after a passenger ferry capsized near Kyrenia in Cyprus. The operation is being carried out in cooperation with the authorities of northern Cyprus. As Cyprus Mail reports, the ferry was traveling from Kyrenia to the Turkish port of Tasucu and capsized shortly after leaving the new Kyrenia port on August 30. There were 259 passengers and eight crew members on board. Victims and search operation According to Erdogan, 239 people were rescued, 14 died, and another 14 have still not been found. Turkey has also sent two deep-sea research vessels to the accident area — TCG Isin and TCG Alemdar. The office of Unal Ustel said that TCG Isin temporarily left the waters near Cyprus for refueling and is expected to resume work after it is completed. According to the office, both vessels have the technical capabilities for search-and-rescue operations at great depths. Accident investigation Erdogan said that the authorities of northern Cyprus have launched an investigation into the accident. All eight crew members, including the captain, were detained on the day of the disaster; they remain in custody. Unal Ustel is in Turkey, where he is discussing reports from specialized organizations involved in searches for sunken vessels and salvage operations. He also intends to hold meetings with representatives of the ferry's insurance company and Turkish officials to determine further steps regarding the search for the missing, work inside the vessel, or raising the sunken ferry.
