ECP gives KP govt three more weeks to complete LG amendments

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday granted the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government three more weeks to complete proposed legal amendments required for holding local government (LG) elections in the province and summoned the provincial Local Government Minister on October 20. The commission was hearing a case concerning the delay in holding local government elections in KP. The LG Secretary and Chief Secretary informed the commission that the provincial standing committee was working on the proposed amendments. The ECP Special Secretary observed that the provincial government appeared reluctant to hold the local government elections as the required amendments had not been completed within the previously granted timeframe. The Chief Secretary requested another three-week period, citing the prevailing law and order situation in the province. The commission subsequently summoned the LG Minister for the next hearing and adjourned the proceedings until October 20.
