United Is the Only U.S. Airline Flying Nonstop to These 8 New International Cities in 2027

The carrier announced the expansion on August 25, describing it as the largest international network expansion in its history. Eight Cities Where United Will Have the Nonstop Advantage The new destinations span Europe, Asia, and the Atlantic, giving United an unusually broad collection of exclusive international routes. From San Francisco, the airline will launch nonstop service to Okinawa, Japan, on March 27, 2027, operating three times weekly with a Boeing 777-200ER. Newark Liberty International Airport will account for most of the exclusive additions. United plans to begin Ljubljana, Slovenia, service on May 12, followed by Olbia in Sardinia on May 27, Catania in Sicily on May 28, Ibiza, Spain on May 31, Valencia, Spain on June 2, Marseille, France on June 4 and Terceira in the Azores on June 9. That gives travelers access to several leisure and business markets that currently lack nonstop service from another U.S. airline. The frequencies range from three weekly flights to daily service, while aircraft include the Boeing 767-300ER, 767-400ER, 737 MAX 8 and Airbus A321XLR. Newark Becomes United's International Powerhouse Newark is the biggest winner, receiving eight of the 10 newly announced international cities. United will also add Luxembourg City from Newark on April 2, operated daily with the A321XLR, although the airline's exclusive U.S.-nonstop distinction applies to eight destinations in the overall expansion. The strategy strengthens United's position across both oceans. For 2027, the airline says it will serve 53 Atlantic destinations and 34 Pacific destinations, more than any other carrier across those two regions. The expansion also introduces United's new 'Born to Explore' A321XLR internationally, featuring Polaris suites with privacy doors, Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, and upgraded Economy and Economy Plus seating. United is pairing the route expansion with new technology designed to make international travel more flexible. Its app now allows disrupted passengers to join standby lists for up to three earlier United flights while retaining their confirmed itinerary, with notifications sent if seats become available. At Newark, a separate pilot lets passengers at select Terminal C gates order food, drinks, and travel essentials through the app for pickup before boarding. With tickets already on sale, the 2027 expansion gives United something competitors cannot currently match on these eight city pairs: a direct U.S. connection where no other U.S. airline provides one.
