Humanoid robots are coming for their 'ChatGPT moment'— Here's why 2027 matters
In today's competitive landscape of artificial intelligence, the humanoid robot industry has been flourishing and advancing at rapid pace.
Given its advancement, many CEOs of robotics have hoped that these robots might experience its ChatGPT moment in coming years.
According to the CEO of Chinese AI startup ACE Robotics, humanoid robot brains could witness a breakthrough by late next year, mirroring the dramatic impact of ChatGPT on the rapid use and integration of artificial intelligence.
"We expect to reach the 'ChatGPT moment' for embodied intelligence by the end of next year, driven by world models and environmental data capture," Wang Xiaogang said.
"Even if we reach that inflection point by late 2027, it will likely take another four to five years to see broad commercial implementation of embodied world models across sectors," Wang added.
Earlier this week, the founder of China's Unitree, Wang Xingxing, also predicted the happening of the same breakthrough but in two to three years at the earliest.
"We hope that in the future, we can see a robot be introduced into an unfamiliar household and it can achieve approximately 80% of tasks successfully through voice or text commands," he said.
"It is an important tipping point for the robot industry to usher in explosive growth."
But this breakthrough is not bereft of technological challenges. First comes the data bottleneck as the entire industry has only accumulated roughly 100,000 hours of data over the past few years, which falls far short of what is needed to train embodied foundation models.
ACE Robotics is addressing this by using people on real production lines fitted with lightweight sensors, aiming to accumulate tens of millions of hours of data within two years. Traditional training methods rely on physical tele-operation with exoskeletons and controllers.
Companies are utilizing AI chips from both Nvidia and domestic Chinese makers to diversify supply chains and drive down costs.
ACE Robotics startup was founded in July 2025 and it raised over $100 million in the first half of the year while aiming for an IPO as early as permitted. Its open-source model Kairos-4B model ranks first on benchmarks, outcompeting models like Nvidia's Cosmos 3 and Ant Group's Lingbot.
