The documents are now being released after transparency organization 9/11 Health Watch sued New York City to force their disclosure. Documents Reveal Dangerous Contaminants The newly disclosed records contain evidence of hazardous conditions extending beyond the immediate footprint of the Twin Towers. According to the New York Times, a November 2001 audit prepared by a private company and submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency relied on information collected by New York City and state agencies. The findings raised serious concerns. 'That audit demonstrated that air concentration of the carcinogen benzene was still spiking near the towers' footprint, and that the concentration of asbestos in the air at the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island had increased after the attacks,' the New York Times reported. The records also show higher-than-acceptable levels of asbestos and other contaminants in dust and air elsewhere in Lower Manhattan. Yet Americans were being told something very different. Officials Told Public Air Was 'Safe' Despite evidence showing dangerous contamination, government officials publicly reassured New Yorkers that the air was safe to breathe. Among those officials was then-EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman. Whitman publicly declared in the aftermath of the attacks that the air around Ground Zero was safe. She has since apologized for those assurances. But for the people who spent days, weeks, and months breathing the air around the disaster zone, those assurances cannot be undone. Firefighters, police officers, construction workers, cleanup crews, residents, and volunteers were exposed to the toxic environment while believing government officials who told them they were safe. Twenty-five years later, the consequences continue. 9/11 Survivors Still Getting Sick The disclosures arrive as New Yorkers exposed to Ground Zero continue developing serious illnesses, including lung and blood cancers, respiratory diseases, and heart conditions. The New York Times warned that the documents could expose New York City to another wave of litigation over what officials knew about the contamination and what they told the public. Denise Verzi's husband, firefighter Michael Verzi, responded to the terrorist attack and later suffered from lymphoma. 'I don't understand hiding it to begin with,' Verzi told the New York Times.
