Blind man avoids jail after driving 150 miles on M6 by following lorry tail lights

A registered blind man who drove approximately 150 miles along the M6 motorway while intoxicated — navigating only by following the tail lights of lorries — has received a suspended prison sentence. Anthony Hall, 50, took his partner's Vauxhall Meriva without consent from Huddersfield in the early hours of June 29 after the pair had shared four bottles of wine. Hall, who has never held a driving licence and lost his sight around two years prior, intended to drive to Scotland following domestic disagreements at home. Navigating by HGV lights During the journey, Hall relied on the rear lights of heavy goods vehicles to guide him in the dark, explaining to police that he could still perceive some light. At one point, he stopped at a petrol station where a staff member refuelled the car for him. Police officers intercepted the vehicle on the M6 northbound near Carlisle at around 01:45 BST after observing it "weaving around" between lanes and drifting onto the hard shoulder. Hall was the sole occupant of the car and admitted he understood the risks of his actions.
