Court Sends Building Owner and Wife to Judicial Custody Following Delhi Collapse

New Delhi, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant ruling, the Patiala House Court in New Delhi has ordered the owner of a collapsed building, Hariram Gupta, and his wife, Urmila Gupta, to be held in judicial custody for 14 days. Their son, Mahesh Gupta, has been remanded to police custody for two days as investigations continue into the incident in the Satya Niketan area. During the court proceedings, the Delhi Police sought judicial custody for Hariram and Urmila, while requesting police custody for Mahesh, who is suspected of playing a crucial role in the illegal construction and operation of the building. Judge Bhavya Khare granted these requests, emphasizing the need for further questioning of Mahesh. In the aftermath of the collapse, Delhi government minister Ashish Sood visited the AIIMS Trauma Center to check on the injured. He met with four patients, one of whom is in the ICU. Sood assured that arrangements had been made for the patients' families to stay close by and that they were receiving appropriate medical care. Earlier, Sood shared on social media that he participated in a review meeting chaired by Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, Tajinder Singh Sandhu, and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The meeting included senior officials from the NDRF and the Delhi Police, focusing on building safety, student housing arrangements, and regulations for paying guest accommodations. Following the discussions, Sood announced plans to lead a committee of senior officials. This committee will review institutional guidelines for paying guest accommodations, explore alternative housing options for students through universities, MCD, and DDA, and assess the potential use of vacant DDA properties for student housing. Sood expressed his condolences regarding the tragic incident in Satya Niketan, stating that efforts are underway to improve emergency response times and enhance preparedness. He emphasized the importance of providing better residential facilities for students coming to the city for education and career opportunities, as well as regulating paying guest accommodations to ensure student safety.
