Cuyahoga County's six-year bachelor's degree completion rate for Black or African American students was 30.8% by 2024

At Cleveland State University, the only public four-year institution in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, 30.8% of Black or African American students in the 2018 entering cohort had earned a bachelor's degree within six years by 2024. Among the 234 students who entered in 2018, 72 had completed a bachelor's degree through 2024, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The county rate was 6.3 percentage points lower than the statewide rate for Black or African American students, which was 37.1% for the same cohort. The six-year bachelor's degree completion rate for Black or African American students in Cuyahoga County increased by 4.3 percentage points from the 26.5% rate seen in the 2017 entering cohort. Of the 162 students who did not earn a bachelor's degree at Cleveland State University within six years, 71 transferred to another institution, 12 were still enrolled at the reporting institution, and 79 were no longer enrolled at the reporting institution by 2024. Figures cover full-time, first-time students who were seeking a bachelor's degree when they entered in 2018, measured through 2024. The cohort excludes students who transferred in and students who began part time. The county figure pools the student counts reported by the one public four-year institution named below. The six-year graduation rate generally measures the share of full-time, first-time undergraduate students seeking a bachelor's degree who complete their program within 150% of the normal time, or six years at a four-year institution. The National Center for Education Statistics collects the measure through its Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System for federal Student Right-to-Know reporting. Because the traditional graduation-rate cohort is limited to full-time, first-time students, it does not provide a complete picture of outcomes for part-time students or students who transfer into an institution. College completion rates have held relatively steady in recent years, but racial and ethnic gaps persist. Among students who entered college in fall 2019, 75.7% of Asian students and 69% of White students earned a credential within six years, compared with 50.5% of Hispanic students and 44% of Black students, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Across all students, the six-year completion rate was 61.1%. These figures come from the graduation-rates file currently available from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System for this collection. Figures may be updated if the National Center for Education Statistics later publishes a revised file for the same collection.
