"Now, as far as your overall record in interconference play, whether it's the Pac-12 or the Big 12, Deion Sanders over the three years is 9-18," Newton said on his "4th & 1" podcast. "Unacceptable. I don't need to say he knows that that's unacceptable." Former Cardinals star made sure to clarify that his criticism wasn't personal. Instead, he is holding Sanders to the incredibly high standard the Colorado coach set for himself when he first took the job. "I'm not holding him accountable to a standard that he knows, and everybody knows," Newton said. "We expect Coach Prime to win. That's the expectation that he set for himself. But if he doesn't win, yes, it would be a bad look for his coaching record." The numbers back up Newton's point. Colorado would need nine wins in 2026 just to push Sanders to .500 for his tenure, matching his 2024 season when Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter anchored the roster. However, neither is walking through that door again. This year's team enters the season picked near the bottom of the Big 12 in the preseason media poll, and the offseason brought its own warning signs, such as uneven recruiting rankings, a heavy run of transfer portal departures and reports of season-ticket renewals slipping. Sanders is signed to a five-year, $54 million contract, so his job isn't in immediate jeopardy. His recent struggles also come with major context off the field. Sanders spent a massive portion of the 2025 calendar fighting severe health complications, undergoing radical surgery to remove a cancerous bladder alongside separate procedures to treat recurring blood clots. He enters the 2026 season completely cancer-free and back at full strength. His health has recovered, but Newton's core point focuses on his coaching legacy. The 59-year-old Hall of Famer built his entire personal brand on winning. Four years into his tenure in Boulder, his actual record still hasn't caught up to that reputation.
