Bill Maher Shares Suspicions Over Liberal College ‘Monoculture'

Bill Maher has gotten into a number of political discussions throughout his career. During a recent episode of his talk show, he weighed in on the political culture of American college campuses. He also discussed the topic with a figure who knows the story firsthand. Bill Maher Recently Invited Wesleyan University President Michael Roth To His Real Time Show Maher previously hosted Politically Incorrect for ABC and Comedy Central from 1993 to 2002. Starting in 2003, he became the host of his own HBO political talk show, Real Time with Bill Maher. He has also hosted the Club Random podcast since 2022. During a recent episode of Real Time, Maher welcomed Wesleyan University President Michael Roth as a guest. Roth is also the author of The Student: A Short History, which explores the role of the student from ancient times to the present. Speaking with Maher, Roth shared, 'I've been talking for the last 10 years about the need to diversify the faculty at colleges and universities. We have too much of a political monoculture, and we have to work really hard to bring other ideas into the campus. Roth continued, 'I do think most teachers are not trying to indoctrinate their students. They're trying to get them to think for themselves. But we have a lot of work to do in that regard to make it a more open environment.' Roth also claimed that Wesleyan has 'tried very hard to bring lots more conservative voices on our campus,' including bringing in members of Republican administrations and Christianity Today editors as lecturers. Maher Also Discussed Statistics After Roth's Initial Share For his part, Maher seemed to agree with the sentiment. He shared, 'The statistics, when they've done surveys on this — and again, I'm not pushing for the Republicans — I'm just saying when one place, no matter what it is — we know of this here in the state of California — when one party, when one point of view controls everything, they are not checked. And that's what's happened on campus.' Maher also claimed that 'something like 77 out of every 80 professors vote Democratic.' Feeling a need for bipartisianship, he continued, 'That's a ridiculous number. How did we get there?' Roth then ended the conversation with a joke: 'Well, I think one of the reasons, you have to understand, you're in graduate school for eight to 10 years, and you're taking a job with a starting salary of $70,000.
