CM to launch UPTEX '26, hand over LoCs to new textile units

Lucknow: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath will inaugurate a two-day textile industry event — UPTEX 2026 — in Lucknow on Tuesday and extend Letters of Comfort (LoCs) to 50 new and expanding textile units. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the event, an official spokesperson said that UPTEX 2026 is part of the state's push to attract fresh investment and generate employment in the sector. 'These units are benefitting under provisions of Uttar Pradesh Handloom, Powerloom, Silk, Textile and Garmenting Policy-2017 and the Uttar Pradesh Textile and Garmenting Policy-2022. So far, financial assistance amounting to Rs 416.75 crore has been distributed to 157 units,' they said. To be held at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan on Sept 8 and 9, UPTEX will bring together textile manufacturers and traders from across the country. Govt is positioning the event as a platform to showcase the state's textile potential, facilitate investment and strengthen the handloom, powerloom and garmenting sectors. Informing that govt had undertaken several initiatives for weavers' welfare over the past few years, they said under the Mukhyamantri Handloom and Powerloom Industry Development Scheme launched in 2023-24, as many as 4,122 weavers have received Rs 73.18 crore for buying new looms, construction of workshops and training. Another 4,039 Scheduled Caste weavers have been provided Rs 77.45 crore under the Jhalkari Bai Kori Handloom and Powerloom Development Scheme. Govt has also approved Rs 3,446.44 crore under the Atal Bihari Powerloom Weaver Electricity Flat Rate Scheme, benefiting 99,929 powerloom electricity connection holders. The scheme is aimed at providing relief from electricity costs and reducing the production burden on weavers. Alongside financial support, the state is building textile infrastructure. A 1,000-acre PM MITRA Park is being developed on the Lucknow-Hardoi border. Land identification is underway for textile parks in Varanasi, Sant Kabir Nagar, Bareilly, Bijnor and Amroha under the Sant Kabir Textile and Apparel Park Scheme. Similar processes are underway in Sitapur, Rae Bareli, Mau and Kanpur Nagar. For 2026-27, the department has launched the Uttar Pradesh Textile Sector Training and Skill Development Scheme to create a skilled workforce. The Mukhyamantri Handloom Weaver Prosperity Scheme will seek to organise weavers into groups, promote collective production, raise incomes and increase exports.
