Rs 8-crore Multipurpose Indoor Complex Awaits Inauguration

Nellore: Mogallapalem has a Multipurpose Indoor Sports Complex, sanctioned at around Rs 8 crore under the Khelo India scheme. The facility was completed in 2023, but is still awaiting its formal inauguration. The complex is located on the 150-acre Mogallapalem site that had been identified for the proposed regional sports centre and sports village. Its presence adds to the potential of the location to emerge as a comprehensive sporting destination if remaining infrastructure and institutional support are put in place. The indoor complex was intended to provide a dedicated facility for training, coaching camps and competitions in various indoor sporting disciplines, particularly benefiting young athletes from Nellore and neighbouring districts. Once operational, it could become an important component of the larger sports ecosystem envisaged for Mogallapalem. That an Rs 8-crore facility is ready while the broader vision for the 150-acre site is still evolving underlines both the potential and the unfinished nature of Mogallapalem's sporting story. With the state now pursuing a fresh proposal for a Khelo India Centre in Nellore, an opportunity is at hand to build upon the infrastructure already created at Mogallapalem. Financial support under the Khelo India scheme could help meet expenses related to staff and administration, coaching, training programmes and activities through various sports academies, said M Panduranga Rao, in-charge district sports development officer, Nellore.
