In communal elections, the group issued posters urging Jews to 'vote German,' meaning not for East European Jews. Hitlerists painted swastikas on the posters and laughed. Naumann's circle insisted native German Jews were Germanic tribesmen who happened to practice Judaism. 'Tikkun olam' (fixing the world) is not a license for suicide. Particular obligation does not cancel universal concern; it orders it. A people that has been hunted for millennia does not get to treat its own survival as the last item on a progressive checklist. Those who invert the order join a long and unlucky line. Prioritize the Jewish people and the Jewish state. Then, from that secure ground, care for everyone else.
