Council's stance on Bird Flu

I'd like to acknowledge the recent developments regarding Avian Influenza H5N1. As this column goes to print, more than 70 cases have been reported in Victoria. As a region renowned for our natural environment, diverse birdlife and rich biodiversity, this outbreak is of particular concern to the Yarra Ranges community. It is also understandably worrying for our , as it is also for our local farming and agriculture sectors, as well as those who keep poultry or pet birds. While this news is concerning, it's important that we all remain informed, vigilant and continue to follow the advice of authorities. Please avoid contact with sick or dead wild birds or wildlife, and the areas around them. If you encounter sick or dead wild birds, record what you observe and contact the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 immediately. The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) will assess reports and determine the appropriate response. Community reporting plays a vital role in helping authorities respond quickly and effectively. For our local farmers, poultry owners and residents who keep birds as pets, I encourage you to stay informed and review latest advice from Agriculture Victoria. Their website contains important information about avian influenza, including guidance for businesses and bird owners. For more information, visit agriculture.vic.gov.au/birdflu By remaining alert and following the advice of authorities, we can all play our part in helping to protect Yarra Ranges wildlife, support our agricultural industry and minimise the impact of this disease on our local environment and community.
