Worth a Listen: IDC's CTO on Why an AI Should Have an Opinion

September 7, 2026 · AI, AR, & the Analysts #48 Alec Coughlinrecently interviewedJoe Bradley, CTO of IDC, for Episode 32 of theAI with Alecpodcast: #32: Your AI Agrees with You Too Much. IDC Built One That Doesn't. Does It Have an Opinion? It is a good listen for anyone interested in how an analyst firm actually thinks about building with AI — not merely marketing it. The conversation ranges from Bradley's unconventional journey through opera, teaching, physics, Amazon, and Nike to IDC Quanta™ and the changing nature of product development and enterprise work. Four ideas particularly caught my attention: Persuadability is useful… until it becomes drift.Bradley observes that general-purpose AI models are intentionally trained to be persuadable because persuadability is closely connected to usefulness. But that also means they can drift toward whatever answer a user consciously or unconsciously wants. IDC is attempting to make Quanta different by anchoring it in IDC's research, data, methodologies, and perspective while allowing clients to pressure-test it against other information. Bradley describes the goal as'opinionated and open.'As Alec puts it in his accompanying episode notes, an intelligence layer that agrees with whoever is typing risks becoming'a mirror with a search index.' Quanta started with a partitionable business problem, not a moonshot. One of Bradley's first moves at IDC was applying AI to MarketScape production. MarketScape is a standard IDC research report produced by multiple services not a separate service or business with its own P&L. But its production represented a bounded workflow where IDC could apply AI, observe the results, and demonstrate value. That work subsequently helped form the foundation for Quanta. There is a useful lesson here for other analyst firms and their clients: begin with a clearly defined business problem, not with AI for AI's sake. An intelligence layer must escape the confines of its application.Bradley distinguishes Quanta from a chatbot attached to the IDC website. IDC wants its intelligence to be available wherever clients are already working including Claude, email, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with Teams, ChatGPT, and Slack among the additional environments discussed. This is a tangible example of the strategic choice I have been tracking across the analyst industry:Does the firm bring the client to its intelligence—or bring its intelligence to the client? The ownership model may matter more than the AI tool.Asked what separates people who run with AI from those who stall, Bradley does not begin with technical skills. He points to whether people take ownership of their work and genuinely want to improve it. Some will use AI to optimize an existing process; others will rethink the process entirely. Organizations need both. It is worth remembering the next time 'AI readiness' gets reduced to a training program or technology budget. Bradley expects the gap between companies that learn to build effectively with AI and those that do not to become increasingly uneven and increasingly costly for those on the wrong side. Two capabilities could accelerate that divide: an enterprise data layer that provides AI with persistent organizational context, and shared AI agents that can work across people, teams, and applications rather than belonging to one individual user. His closing advice doubles as a warning for analyst firms: determine what constitutes your genuinely differentiated intellectual property, then'carve away everything that isn't the sculpture.' If you only have time for two segments, I would recommend'Does it have an opinion?'at approximately 16:00 and theownership-model discussionat approximately 31:00.
