For most of the internet's history, proving you were human was not a clear or especially difficult problem. It was an assumption built into the system. Accounts were presumed to belong to people; participation was presumed to be human participation; and trust, however imperfect, still rested on the idea that a real person sat somewhere behind the screen. That assumption is starting to break down.
