Power lines would destroy Wisconsin's unique Driftless region

The Driftless region is so called because glaciers never covered the area during the last Ice Age and thus did not leave any 'drift,' leaving high ridges and deep valleys undisturbed. There is no place in North America quite like the Driftless region that encompasses a good portion of southwest Wisconsin. The beauty and unique geology and topography of the region provides a home to many flowers and critters not found elsewhere. Two proposed 765 kilovolt transmission lines (called MariBell and BECI) that are being sold to us as necessary could change all of that ('Residents alarmed by plan for high-voltage line,' Sept. 1). But the question remains, and has not been answered, do we need to sacrifice this unique and wonderful area to the gods of greed? The size of these lines is well beyond anything else in Wisconsin. Another question not answered is how much of this power is needed and will it be used in Wisconsin? Are we willing to sacrifice a region of Wisconsin that held back the glaciers eons ago to now be destroyed by soaring transmission lines of questionable need? Make no mistake, if the lines are built, despite their claims of little impact, there is no going back, what is lost in the Driftless region cannot be replicated or replaced. This is not just a few landowners saying, 'not in my back yard.' It should be all of us saying, not in our back yard.
