The AfD Rises on the German Right

A political crisis in Germany is the last thing Europe needs, but it may be what Europe gets. Voters in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday plunged politics into disarray with a strong show of support for a formerly outcast party of the insurgent right. Exit polls say the Alternative for Germany party (AfD) is on track to win some 44% of the vote for the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament. That's the party's strongest showing to date in a state election, and a 23 percentage-point gain from five years ago.
