I think everyone should drink more Gamay, and this light-to-medium-bodied version from Upper Bench, with its notes of cherry and raspberry, is a wonderful place to start. I sometimes describe Gamay as a red wine for white wine lovers as it has low tannins and good acidity, characteristics we typically associate with white wines. I had a lovely quick stop at Upper Bench last month. It was a quiet and very hot morning, mid-week, but I went early and picked up a couple bottles plus some Upper Bench cheese — made on site — to enjoy later. Delicious. Pair with: Roast chicken, cedar-planked salmon, duck breast, mushroom risotto, or perhaps a thin-crust Italian-style pizza like the kind they serve at the winery.
