City Hall project: Stop digging, start over

I realize that trying to arrange for adequate city hall and police facilities has been extraordinarily difficult. But there is an adage: If you find yourself in a deep hole, stop digging. What seemed like a great solution combining two functions now seems to just keep growing more complicated and extremely more expensive. I and many like me believe it's time to stop and go back to the drawing board. Voters are disillusioned by the changes. I believe that cramming so many functions and people into an already extremely tight residential neighborhood is not right for this town. Third Avenue is a showpiece of the historical, elegant, beautiful Durango of the past. This congestion, traffic and constant siren noise may push those neighbors to leave. Should that direction continue, all of that historic street may slowly turn commercial, destroying this lovely piece of history. Look at other cities like Santa Fe, where elegant, stately streets have sadly gone that way. We have an empty mall situated between Durango, west Durango, Three Springs and the Airpark. Bodo is right across the road, where the La Plata Detention Center houses the city jail. What better site to place a police station, with easy access to U.S. Highway 160 for rapid responses. I'm sure there are other better sites as well. Please reconsider. Twelfth Street is just not the answer for the current plan. Connie Durand Durango
