Sept. 6 Letters Part 4: Our Readers' Opinions

Image
Tired of the peacocks It takes deep pockets from the deepest state to fund a political advertising campaign. Who has the biggest advertising budget? The candidate with the biggest mostest signs, of course. I think of them as 'peacock politicians' or 'flash-in-the-political-pans.' Peacock politicians are always overconfident and undercompetent for people. Voters are tired of being overpromised and underdelivered by political advertising of peacock politicians. We're tired of money in politics, tired of signs, the print and digital ads ... . Platforms of fear-mongering, propaganda and scapegoating are insults to our intelligence. It's all so wasteful and people aren't buying it anymore. We don't believe you. Why does a political candidate need all the purchased advertising, anyway? Voters know who's been doing good things for their community between elections. Do-goodery makes great local news. The financially savvy candidates (the kind we like) have been writing editorials and opinions revealing their conscience for community care all along. The good deeds of civic club members are noted publicly every Sunday, and maybe the best places to find a qualified candidate is in the 'thank you's,' union and/or veteran advocacy membership rosters and public servant employment records. A record of caring about our community should get better campaign mileage than a season of political signage. You cannot purchase the kind of character worthy of a vote. A candidate with money to burn for a vote is a dead giveaway for the worst choice. A little bit goes a long way, and dark-money burners are out.
