Image
Dear Amy, My brother and his girlfriend broke up almost a year ago after dating for five years. The problem is, apparently, she only broke up with him. The rest of us seem to still be in a relationship with her. She still texts my mom several times a week, goes shopping with my sister and somehow manages to get invited to birthdays, cookouts and even holidays. My mother says she became part of the family during those five years, and it would be cruel to suddenly cut her off. My brother hates it. He has started dating someone new and things are getting serious. He says it is awkward bringing his new girlfriend around when his ex is always there. Now my mother is talking about inviting the ex to our annual family beach trip because 'she's been going for years.' My brother says if his ex goes, he won't. I like his ex, but I also understand why he's frustrated. Does breaking up with someone mean they have to break up with the whole family, too? — Stuck With the "Ex" Dear Stuck, Absolutely not.
