Turnovers Are the Hallmark of UCF's Defense

The UCF Knights' defense has set a standard for this season, prioritizing forcing turnovers weekly, and they got off to a good start against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on Thursday. Defensive back Jayden Williams started the party with a 47-yard pick-six on Bethune-Cookman's second drive in the first quarter. Quarterback Tyler Jefferson faced pressure from linebacker Lewis Carter, overthrew his intended receiver and Williams intercepted the pass. He ran through open gaps created by his teammates blocking before diving into the end zone. Williams said his focus every time he gets the ball is to score since the defense rarely gets those opportunities. "Every time I get my hands on a ball, I try to score no matter the situation, no matter what it is," Williams said during the post-game press conference. "You know, we really don't get those opportunities a lot." The Knights' defense continued to terrorize the Wildcats, as edge rusher Aymeric Koumba strip-sacked Jefferson and defensive tackle Horace Lockett recovered the fumble at the opposite 37-yard line. It was the second and last turnover of the night for UCF in its 73-6 victory. Williams said forcing turnovers is a standard for the defense, one they've been preaching about since spring. "That's just the standard: to get hands on the ball, to punch at the ball, interceptions, and that's been our emphasis over the winter, spring ball, even summer, fall camp," Williams said. UCF continues to start the season well by generating takeaways, and it must become consistent to be the hallmark of the defense. The team generated seven turnovers in four games last season, but struggled the rest of the season. Former Knights quarterback Tayven Jackson fumbled after getting sacked, and the Jayhawks recovered the fumble at the two-yard line. The Jayhawks scored off the turnover, ultimately winning 27-20. Thursday's season opener was a statement victory, and one the team can build on before facing the Pittsburgh Panthers next week. The Week 2 matchup is regarded as one of the toughest matchups for UCF. "We passed this test," Coach Scott Frost said during the post-game press conference.
