Letter: 988: A number to remember

Too many people struggle in silence. They may worry that what they are experiencing isn't 'serious enough,' that they will be judged, or that no one will understand. But they don't have to face those moments alone. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling or texting 988. Trained crisis counselors are there to listen, provide support and help connect people with additional resources. September is Suicide Prevention Month, making it an important time to remind our community that 988 is for everyone and you don't have to wait until you are at your breaking point to reach out. As the Director of Development at NAMI Greater Mississippi Valley, I know how powerful it can be when people have somewhere to turn. Sometimes, people don't need someone to fix everything. They need someone to listen, help them feel seen and heard, and remind them they aren't alone. That is what 988 can provide. A crisis can happen to anyone. It can follow the loss of a loved one, financial stress, relationship difficulties, overwhelming responsibilities, or simply a period when life feels like more than someone can manage. Whatever the reason, it is reason enough to reach out. On Sept. 8, 988 Day, NAMI Greater Mississippi Valley encourages everyone to save 988 in their phone and share it with someone they love. Call or text 988. You never know when someone may need someone to listen.
