Most KDH News poll respondents say experience should be top quality in a new Killeen city manager

More than 6 in 10 respondents to a KDH News online poll say they think experience should be the top quality the Killeen City Council is looking for in a new city manager. The poll, conducted between Aug. 30 and Sept. 5, saw about 62% of voters agreeing with the two statements that experience should the main factor, compared to just over 30% who thought other factors should be considered. The remainder were unsure. Killeen's city manager, Kent Cagle, announced his retirement effective at the end of May and has remained in the office in an interim capacity. During his more than six years with the city, Cagle has proved to be adept at managing the city budget and managing municipal projects. With a background of 35 years in municipal government, his experience was an asset the city could count on. However, other leadership qualities have come under discussion, such as communication, transparency and creative thinking. The council met last week to begin reviewing the applications the city has received for the position through a hiring firm. More than 100 people applied for the city manager's post. The city is expected to bring in the finalists for a town hall meeting too meet with the public. With that in mnd, the Herald weekly poll asked readers, 'Should experience be the top quality the Killeen City Council is looking for in a new city manager?' The top answer, with 40.3% of the vote, was, 'Yes. It's possible to have a background in related fields, but a seasoned city manager is the best pick.' The other affrimative answer drew 21.5% of the votes: 'Yes. Other qualities are important, but you can't replace on-the-job experience in a candidate.' The top 'no' answer, with 16%, was, 'No. A solid resume is one measure, but that alone doesn't make a candidate a good fit.' The other 'no' answer drew 14.6% of the votes: 'A less-experienced candidate with great leadership skills would be just as valuable to the city.' A total of 7.6% of respondents voted for 'Unsure. It's hard to say. Killeen needs an experienced manager, but other qualities are crucial as well.' Readers are welcome to participate in the Herald's online poll, which ends Saturday.
