Reader suggests using old KISD buildings to house homeless

To the Editor: Just a thought: KISD has several schools for sale. These buildings are still functional. They have a lot of rooms, kitchen, bath, showers. Why not use one or more not just as a warming or cooling centers, but also temporary housing? I don't see a line of buyers. Maybe get local businesses to sponsor a room. Maybe get some businesses to hire the residents who are able to work, do something on site. It's a lot of good PR, maybe some tax breaks. Use the facilities to let these folks find some traction to get on the road of life. KISD, city, other entities can use what we have for best benefit. Find grant money, federal programs, etc., to help with this alternative use. Run the numbers to adapt a room/furniture, etc. Anything you do will cost. Doing nothing will cost more. Work through all the legal issues. This seems like a reasonable concept. We need public feedback. Back in the '08 housing market crash, a large percentage of families were within 90 days of being on the street. Where would you go? Wayne Duncan Killeen
