Letter to the Editor – Leon Pethick I read the Mayor's letter in the paper the other week and the story of the new sports centre out by the 2 mile school some-where, was very interesting. The aspirations to have a centre suitable for Olympic Games events was very forward thinking. But, I would think the Olympic committee have probably already decided where the various events will be held. So maybe that was drawing a very long bow. However, if by some chance an Olympic event were to be held in Gympie, that would be a great success for the planers. I would imagine that, should this actually happen, then such an event would most probably held over more than one day. I was interested as to how the GRC was going to accommodate competitors, officials, spectators. Gympie does not even have a caravan park there would not be enough Motel space and I do not envisage these people living in tents or maybe even sleepimg in their cars or buses. Please do not say the Games are still a long way off and there is plenty of time to build such infrastructure to house these people. Glen have you been in to your Council recently and tried to build anything in this town. The paperwork required and all the red white blue green and any other colour tape you care to mention will smother you. So before you talk about Olympic Games, nice as that sounds, there is very little hope accommodation could be built in time. The nonsense at the Civic Centre or the Museum Gantry might give you some idea as to how fast these people work. Another glacial speed effort by the Council is to rectify a mistake. Do not try to tell me that a job, like you envisage, will not have mistakes, then you will be sorely disillusioned. Nice idea, sadly a bit late, but do not stop with the build. You might consider some form of accommodation for travelling people. They all spend money and our economy needs plenty of that. L. Pethick, Gympie
