Historic tree dating back to Abraham Lincoln damaged in Springfield
It may be the last living tree standing when Abraham Lincoln and his family lived in the Springfield neighborhood from 1844 to 1861.
Over three years after tornado-force windstorms devastated Sangamon County, I am still fighting with State Farm to fix the damage to my home.
While many of my neighbors insured by other companies had their claims promptly inspected and settled, I waited a month to receive an inspection from State Farm. Today, approximately $50,000 in necessary repairs remains unpaid.
My experience has become even more concerning in light of recent reports regarding unsealed State Farm documents from litigation in Oklahoma.

According to those reports, internal company communications allegedly discussed changes to hail and wind claims handling that resulted in dramatically reduced claim payments and fewer roof replacements, contributing to an estimated $1.4 billion reduction in indemnity payments.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond accused State Farm of running a 'Denial Enterprise' under the state's anti-racketeering statute.
'The allegations describe a corporate scheme that threatens the integrity of Oklahoma's insurance market place and undermines public confidence in an industry families rely on when disaster strikes.'
The Illinois Department of Insurance received more than 2,100 complaints involving State Farm between July 2023 and April 2025.
Insurance is a promise. Homeowners faithfully pay premiums year after year with the expectation that when disaster strikes, their insurer will help them recover. No family should be forced into a years-long battle to restore their home after a covered loss.
I urge state regulators, legislators, and fellow policyholders to closely examine whether Illinois consumers are receiving the fair treatment they deserve.
