That elusive horizon

When you are at sea, literally, say, on a ship or sailboat, you see the horizon. You feel just a few knots more and you can reach out and touch it. But the closer you think you get to the horizon, the farther away it seems. The earth is spherical and the elusive horizon is but a natural fact. Yet, you want to reach for it. Perhaps the thought that you can arrive there keeps you going, metaphorically. You know you can never get all your chores done, you know you may never complete your plan to declutter your home and workplace, your mind space as well as your computer and phone spaces, but you keep trying, anyway. Even if the pace is slow sometimes and at other times, reasonably fast. Never mind. So long as you are making the effort to do any of the above things, all is good. Something is better than nothing. The pile of pre-digital days' unread newspaper and magazine cuttings - waiting to be sorted - are still yellowing in that old suitcase. Clothes that don't fit any more still occupy valuable storage space. Your laptop is groaning with too many files. Your mind is crowded with a zillion thoughts that vie for prime space. Relax. It will get done, one thing at a time. Keep your goals small and doable. Small steps, big results, is what I keep reminding myself. Even if I happen to die without achieving all of the above, so be it. At least, I tried - to lessen the burden of those who will have to clean up after me.
