Letter – Mixed feelings on Surry Y

Editor, The Smithfield Times: Concerning the YMCA for Surry County, I have a mixed bag of comments. I am a retired shipyard worker living in Dendron, and when I was working, I used the YMCAs in Newport News and Smithfield. It was a perfect situation for me; both YMCAs were on the way home and I especially enjoyed the swimming pools, though I did use the gyms as well. I saw good things at the YMCA. There were summer programs for the kids, and I witnessed water aerobics for adults, with trainers in the gyms, as well as swimming instructors. The Smithfield High School swim team uses the YMCA pool. These are all positive things that Surry County residents could take advantage of. A YMCA in Surry would provide jobs, from life guards, trainers, managers, receptionists and even janitors. That's all positive!
