Why Knicks Are Built to Become NBA's First Repeat Champion Since Warriors

Fresh off the heels of their historic 2026 championship run, the New York Knicks are looking to build on that run by trying to become the next major dynasty in the NBA and become the first team to win back-to-back championships since the 2017-18 Golden State Warriors. It won't be an easy task, after all, there's a reason that the NBA has had a different champion in each of the last eight seasons. The parity in the NBA is at an all-time high and the diversity of talent in the league means that it can truly be anyone's year. But the Knicks have several factors working in their favor that make them uniquely suited to become repeat champions and if both good fortune and consistent talent favor them, it's plausible for them to pull off the feat. After the confetti had settled, the Knicks were faced with a difficult situation in the offseason with so many of their players from the championship roster entering free agency and with the image boost that the Finals had on the team, it was easy to see a world where they would lose out on their key role players. But for the most part, the Knicks held on to their best bench players with both Jose Alvarado and Landry Shamet signing team-friendly deals with New York. There was some turnaround, of course, with the departure of Mitchell Robinson in free agency to the Boston Celtics being the biggest change, but keeping together a roster that already won one championship is the best way to start toward winning another. Knicks head coach Mike Brown proved his talents as a head coach in the two full seasons that he led the Sacramento Kings to a major turnaround before he was unceremoniously fired less than halfway through the 2024-25 season, but by leading the Knicks to a championship in the very first season that he joined the franchise, he cemented his legacy. Now Brown is heading in to his second season as head coach in New York and now that he has full familiarity and confidence in his team and staff, Brown's success as a coach should only grow in the 2026-27 season now that he knows exactly where his place is within the team and has an intimate familiarity with his team's strengths and weaknesses. The four seasons that Jalen Brunson has played with the Knicks have cemented him as one of the premier point guards in the NBA and after leading the Knicks to a championship as the Finals MVP, he has a serious level of momentum that should only continue to elevate his skills. How Brunson plays and conducts himself carries over to the rest of the team and with him continuing to play at such a high level, something that likely won't change next season, Brunson is poised to continue putting himself in MVP conversations and in the process, lead the Knicks to even more success.
