The Buffalo Bills' First Five Games Will Define The 2026 Season

The Buffalo Bills won't have to wait long to find out what kind of team they have in 2026 under first-year head coach Joe Brady. Their first five games include five opponents that have legitimate Super Bowl expectations, giving Buffalo a difficult test before the season even reaches its halfway point. The Bills open the season on the road against the Houston Texans before returning home to face the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football. After that comes a matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers, followed by a division game against the New England Patriots and then a road trip to face the Los Angeles Rams. There isn't much of a soft landing in that group. Offensively, the team still has Josh Allen. Worry about how they'll perform doesn't seem to be as strong there. That said, the opening month of games will tell us a lot about Buffalo has a whole, particularly with so many questions surrounding the new-look defense. Jim Leonhard is taking over as defensive coordinator and moving the Bills into a 3-4 system, while several young players are being asked to take on bigger roles. By the time Buffalo gets through those first five games, there should be a much better idea of whether the changes are working. It could also determine how much pressure the Bills face during the rest of the season. A strong start could put Buffalo in an excellent position heading into its Week 7 bye. Starting 4-1 or even 5-0 would give the Bills some breathing room before a difficult stretch later in the season. It would also give them confidence that the new changes, such as the defense and overall roster turnover, were the right things to do. On the other side of things, a slow start would create a very different, and difficult, situation. Going 2-3 wouldn't ruin Buffalo's season, especially with 12 games still to play. However, dropping several of those early matchups could leave the Bills needing to make up ground against an increasingly difficult schedule and, on ce again, chasing the Patriots in the AFC East. The pressure would only increase as Buffalo moves toward games against teams such as the Ravens, Chiefs, Broncos, and Packers later in the year. That's why the opening five games matter so much. They're not just five games on the schedule. They're the first real measuring stick for a Bills team that has undergone significant changes and enters the season with high expectations. They don't need to go undefeated to have a successful season. But if the Bills can come out of those first five games with a strong record and a defense that looks comfortable in a new system, they'll put themselves in a position to control the rest of their season and get back to the top of the AFC standings.
