The world order that we knew for 30 years after the Cold War is dead. It was a unipolar world, run by Washington. Today, in 2026, we are living in an interregnum – the old order is collapsing and the new one is yet to be born. In this chaos, every major power is choosing a camp. Only one major power has chosen to stay out – India.
This is not an accident. It is a strategy.
I. WHAT IS THIS NEW WORLD ORDER?
The new order has three clear features:
1. It is No Longer About Ideology, It is About Transaction: US is not preaching democracy anymore, it is preaching 'friend-shoring' – trade only with friends. China is not preaching communism, it is preaching infrastructure via BRI and debt diplomacy.
2. Two Parallel Systems Are Emerging:
– System A – The Western System: G7, NATO, QUAD, AUKUS, Dollar as reserve currency, US tech control on semiconductors.
– System B – The Eurasian System: BRICS (now 11 members), SCO, China-Russia-Iran axis, de-dollarization, Yuan-Ruble trade, and now the latest – the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan.
3. Power is De-centralized: Earlier, security was provided by US. Today, Saudi Arabia does not trust US after Iranian drones attacked Aramco in 2024-25, so it makes its own Islamic NATO with Turkiye and Pakistan. This is the new world – every region making its own security.

I. WHERE DOES INDIA STAND?
India is the only country which is a member of both systems. We are in QUAD with US, Japan, Australia, and we are also in BRICS and SCO with China, Russia, Iran.
Look at our actions in last 2 years:
– We bought Russian oil worth $50 billion despite US sanctions, saving India Rs 1.5 lakh crore.
– We bought Predator drones from US for $4 billion.
– We bought Rafale from France.
– We still fly Su-30MKI from Russia.
– We abstained on Ukraine votes at UN, and also abstained on Gaza votes.
To the West, this looks like double standards. To New Delhi, this is Strategic Autonomy 2.0.
What is Strategic Autonomy? It is the updated version of Nehru's Non-Alignment. Nehru's NAM meant 'we will not join US or USSR military blocs'. Modi's Strategic Autonomy means 'we will join all economic blocs, but no military bloc.'
III. WHY INDIA IS REFUSING TO CHOOSE? – THE 3 REASONS
Reason 1: The Power Gap Reality
Pravin Sawhney in Force Magazine has been arguing this for years – wars are not won by speeches, they are won by Comprehensive National Power (CNP).
CNP = Economic Power + Military Industrial Power + Technology Power.
– US CNP: GDP $28 Trillion, 11 aircraft carriers, controls chip design (Nvidia, Intel), AI.
– China CNP: GDP $18 Trillion, world's largest navy by numbers, dominates drone and rare earths, 2nd in AI.
– India CNP: GDP $4.2 Trillion, 2 aircraft carriers, import dependent for chips, engines, and even rifles.
If we pick a side now, we will be a junior partner. US wants India as a 'frontline state' against China, like Ukraine against Russia – fight with Indian soldiers, but no direct US involvement. China wants India to accept its hegemony in Asia. Both are unacceptable.
So India needs 15-20 years of economic growth to reach $10 trillion GDP to become a pole in itself. Till then, staying out is survival.
Reason 2: Geography is Different
US is protected by two oceans. China has only one major rival in its neighbourhood. India has two nuclear-armed hostile neighbours – China and Pakistan – who are now joined by Turkiye and Saudi money via Mecca Pact. India cannot afford to make more enemies. If we fully join QUAD militarily, China will activate LAC permanently. If we fully join BRICS militarily, US will put sanctions.
Reason 3: The Technology Trap
The new world order will not be decided by oil, but by semiconductors and AI. India is still 100% import dependent for high-end chips. In this situation, aligning fully with US means losing Russian military spares (60% of our inventory is still Russian), aligning with Russia-China means losing access to US chips. So we need both.
IV. WHAT IS THE COST OF STAYING OUT?
1. Diplomatic Isolation: When Saudi, Turkiye, Pakistan form a NATO-like pact in Mecca with Article 5, they are creating a security architecture without India. Similarly, Iran-Israel war is reshaping West Asia without Indian input. If we stay out of all blocs, no bloc will come to help us during a China war.
2. No Technology Transfer: US gives its best tech only to treaty allies like Israel, Japan. We get downgraded versions. Russia gives best tech to China now, not India.
3. Inside Gap: As our education article discussed earlier – India has 54 universities in QS but none in top 100. Our mean years of schooling is 6.5 years vs China's 8.1. You cannot become a world order maker if your domestic human capital is weak.
V. THE WAY FORWARD – WHAT SHOULD INDIA DO?
– Stop seeking validation from West. Don't crave entry into G7 or UNSC seat as a favour. Power respects power.
– Build internal CNP: Spend 3% of GDP on R&D (currently 0.7%), not just on imported weapons. Make 100 IIT-level institutions, not 5.
– Create own bloc: Instead of joining Mecca Pact or QUAD as follower, India should create its own Indian Ocean security architecture with France, UAE, Mauritius, Indonesia.
Conclusion
The New World Order is not a conference table where you get a seat by invitation. It is a battlefield where you get a seat by strength.
India has chosen to stay out not because it is weak, but because it knows it is not yet strong enough to dictate terms. It is waiting. The question is – is waiting a strategy or is it just delaying the inevitable choice?
This is the central dilemma for Indian foreign policy for the next decade.
