‘I Don't Want to Have an Opinion': Trump Official Dodges When CNN's Dana Bash Presses Him for a Prediction on Gas Prices

Energy Secretary Chris Wright floored CNN's Dana Bash by dodging a question on what might happen with gas prices. In an interview on CNN's State of the Union Sunday, Bash quizzed the secretary about the price of fuel, and asked if it might actually go up even further. "The average cost of a gallon of gas this weekend is the highest on record, $4.13," Bash said. "You said on this show five months ago that high gas prices had peaked. But between not just the Iran war, but the Russia-Ukraine war and the U.S.'s own dwindling reserves, isn't it possible gas prices could go up even more?. Wright ducked the question. "Well, I don't want to have an opinion on that," Wright said — before noting that the futures market suggests prices may fall two months from now. Bash was stunned that Wright punted on her question. "Respectfully, as the Energy Secretary, shouldn't you have an opinion on where gas prices are and where they're going?" Wright was still far from confident. "Well, gasoline production's about to go up and demand is about to go down," he said. "So if I had to guess, they're more likely to go to go down than go up." Wright's hesitance may stem from his prior prognostications which didn't fare terribly well. Back in March, Wright told CNN's Jake Tapper that in the "worst case" scenario, gas prices would be above $3 for "weeks," not "months." Then in April, he told Tapper "prices have likely peaked." But that same interview also rankled President Donald Trump — because Wright said that prices might not drop below $3 until 2027. "I think he's wrong on that," Trump said. "Totally wrong."
