KJ Duff's Week One Performance Should Intrigue the Saints

Rutgers wide receiver KJ Duff showcased dominance in contested-catch situations, reliable hands, and surprising quickness in an elite showing against UMASS. He's flying up draft boards and is an intriguing first-round target for the New Orleans Saints in the 2027 NFL Draft. Despite a stunning outcome, Duff impressed on Thursday night and was the lone bright spot for the Scarlet Knights. His nine receptions for 196 yards and three touchdowns accounted for over 61% of their receiving yards. Even with subpar quarterback play and a lack of a supporting cast, he took over and was the only reason they didn't get shut out. Duff, the six-foot-six, 225-pound junior, is dominant at the catch point. He uses his towering frame to box out smaller defenders, then highpoints the ball and secures it to the ground. He's mastered the ability to subtly push off the defender, creating separation, and not get penalized. Beyond this, he's excellent at tracking the pass and has outstanding body control to contort his frame and reel in the ball. Duff's hands are arguably the best in the nation. He consistently pulls off highlight one-handed catches (Penn State 2025) and can reliably bring in off-target passes, which he's seen plenty of at Rutgers. He rarely drops the ball and is a dependable option for the quarterback. The biggest question with Duff is his ability to create separation. He isn't a route artist who makes instant separation in his cuts, as with any receiver of his size. However, I believe that he has enough agility and quickness to threaten the defense deep and create yards underneath. He understands how to stem defenders also and uses that to make room. It's still an area of concern that he must improve in 2026, but he's not your average X receiver. The Saints have talent at wide receiver, highlighted by Chris Olave and 2025 eight-overall pick Jordyn Tyson. But that doesn't mean the unit isn't an option next April. Both Olave and Tyson, along with the rest of the roster, have struggled with injuries. If this persists, then it may behoove Kellen Moore to add another dynamic and reliable threat to the offense. Additionally, the Saints could use a big-bodied, contested-catch wide receiver. Currently, they have Devaughn Vele, whom they traded for last offseason. He has potential and impressed late in 2025, but he's still unproven. If he impresses, then this need will plummet, but it's important to highlight players just in case he doesn't. Obviously, it's way too early to say anything definitive, but KJ Duff is a talented player who could be a target for the Saints next offseason.
