An Ode to Harrison Smith: Part III

He will be returning for his fifteenth season with the Minnesota Vikings, and perhaps we will be doing all of this again next offseason. It's hard to think that we'll be seeing the same situation, though, given that this was by far the most drawn-out of Harrison Smith's numerous retirement ponderings. Next offseason is next offseason, and we are now one week away from the Vikings kicking off their 2026 campaign on home turf at U.S. Bank Stadium against the Green Bay Packers. All focus is now on getting some final preparations done for the long haul, and that includes the perspective of Harrison Smith as well. This time of year is no stranger to Smith, as this is his 15th time getting ready. Even with his decision taking a long time, reports indicate that he is in football shape and is ready to go for what should be his last ride. Although, we can never be sure, as this is now the third offseason I've claimed this is Smith's last outing. Some fans aren't pleased, viewing Smith as 'washed' or that this is just a reunion tour. This isn't just that; Harrison Smith is still a pretty good football player. Mandatory Credit: Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images Many point to Harrison Smith's age and phyiscal regression as key points as to why bringing him back didn't make a ton of sense. There's also a lot of throwing around the 'washed' term. While it is fair to point out that Smith isn't the same athlete he was when he was 27 instead of 37, he's still a good football player, and is plenty aware of his current limitations with an innate ability to position himself well to be in the best spot to make an impact on a play. While he doesn't have as quick of a first step as he did back in the day, he still has an incredibly high football IQ, which you could argue is more important than the physical traits that have dimished a little bit. This isn't Madden NFL 27, this is real life, and intelligence almost always outperforms physical talent. Would it be cool if Harrison Smith was both an elite athlete by today's standards in the NFL to go along with his intelligence? Sure, but it's not like we're rolling out someone that can't walk out on the field. The Vikings are deploying an extremely savvy veteran who is still a world-class athlete at his 'advanced' age. On top of his football IQ, Harrison Smith's knowledge of the defnese is absolutely priceless. To have someone like Smith on the field for Brian Flores is an absolute cheat code; he knows where everyone is going to lineup ahead of time, and he knows where they're going. His experience also comes in to play when considering the opposing offense. Smith has played a lot of football in his life, and has been through a couple of transitionary periods of the style of offense that's played every Sunday. He has basically seen it all, and that is big when you consider the youth in the Vikings' safety room. It's hard to say that that prediction isn't the same this time around. This offseason was easily the most drawn-out that Harrison has made his decision, but that isn't to say he doesn't deserve it. He's played a lot of football for the Minnesota Vikings, and has taken numerous paycuts to stay in the purple. He could've ring chased as long as four years ago, and no one would've blamed him. Alas, he's stuck around through some rough seasons, and there isn't a single person questioning his loyalty to this team and state. So, let's say this one more time… …if this is it, Harrison Smith: thank you.
