Meet your District 47 legislator Dear Editor: If you live in District 47—Alna, Jefferson, Whitefield, or Wiscasset—and haven’t yet met your state representative, I highly recommend doing so before the 2026 silly season of hyperbolic political ads heats up and sends us all running for cover. Just head on over to the Jefferson Market & General Store, grab a self-serve cup of coffee, ask for owner, proprietor, and your state legislator Wayne Farrin and settle in at one of the homey tables. Whenever he’s not out selling real estate (his other job), he’s happy to talk with constituents. I stopped in with a few neighbors just before the holidays, and an amicable chat with Wayne restored some much-needed hope that common-sense government is still possible. I even managed to finish some last-minute Christmas shopping and groceries while I was there. So what has Wayne been up to in Augusta? It turns out—quietly—quite a lot. He’s been working on kitchen-table issues that matter to regular Mainers, including affordable housing, access to health care, and protecting small businesses from excessive credit card fees. He’s also knowledgeable about fishing issues and coastal economies, having spent many years as a marine engineer, and currently serves on our Marine Resources Committee in addition to the State and Local Government Committee. In short, Wayne Farrin is doing the often-unseen work of cutting through political rhetoric to deliver meaningful results for our towns. Consider this letter a three-fer—a thank-you for Rep. Farrin’s work in 2024–2025, an endorsement of his run in 2026, and a plug for a terrific local small business. And if you do stop by his store, I recommend the breadsticks with pizza sauce—they’re delicious. Bridget Mullen Alna

The Iran war's duration remains uncertain as US and Israeli leaders provide varied outlooks. While not an endless conflict, a fixed end date is absent. Beijing can again leverage its critical minerals dominance over an increasingly busy US military, as Taiwan slides further down the White House list of priorities As the US and Israel opened a new chapter of chaos in the Middle East , China stands to benefit from a Washington establishment that does not have the political or physical resources to focus on Asia. Officially, China has condemned the attacks. Wang Yi, the foreign minister, called them “unacceptable” and called for a ceasefire, rhetoric that is typical of Beijing in response to Donald Trump’s increasingly erratic foreign policy moves. There is no sign of the row between Jon Rahm and the DP World Tour ending any time soon, with the Spaniard saying on Tuesday that he believed players who paid fines were “being extorted”. The two-time major winner’s name was notable by its absence from a list of eight LIV Golf players who were granted conditional releases by the DPWT last month. All eight – Laurie Canter, Thomas Detry, Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, David Puig and Elvis Smylie – paid their fines,...

On arrival, officers discovered an overturned SUV with a man and a woman inside, both unresponsive. PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten Police Force KPSM has confirmed that a traffic incident in the early hours of Monday, March 2, on Arlet Peters Road (also known as Old Cake House Road) is now being treated as a double homicide. Just after 3:30am, Central Dispatch received multiple reports of an overturned SUV near the entrance to Arlet Peters Road. Several patrol units were immediately dispatched to the scene. On arrival, officers discovered a gray SUV that had flipped over. The vehicle’s occupants – a male driver and a female passenger – were both found unresponsive. Despite the efforts of first responders, both were pronounced dead at the scene. Initial investigations by the Traffic Department uncovered evidence suggesting that the incident may not have been a typical traffic accident and could involve a criminal element. Due to these concerns, the case was handed over to personnel from the Detective Department, who are now leading the investigation. The Daily Herald understands that the male driver is known to police, while the female passenger is a tourist visiting the island from The United States. The area surrounding the crash was temporarily cordoned off to facilitate a thorough forensic examination. KPSM urges anyone with information related to the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation. Further details will be released as they become available.
